1997 Dom Chad Interview

I have just stumbled on a really great interview with Dominic Chad from way back in 1997 which originally appeared in Transaction Magazine. Here is an extract:

KB: So where was the first gig you ever played as a band?

DC: It was actually in Liverpool in a little club called The Lomax.

KB: How many people were there?

DC: Not many, probably about fifty people and most of them were from record companies because for the first couple of gigs we did, we were just being checked out constantly. We signed our publishing deal just before that. We were listened to through the door of our rehearsal room-just banging away on our guitars. Someone must have seen into it because this scout came up from London--he came in and asked if he could listen to us. And he went away and literally like a week later he phoned us up and said there ís a publishing deal if you want it, and we said, "Oh great!" So we did it. We packed our jobs in not knowing what we were doing and set up our own record label called Sci-Fi High-Fi Records and released two singles on that. For the first one we released we sent about twenty copies to radio of the thousand that we printed and out the rest in the shops. And basically Radio One, the main radio station in London picked up on it and started playing it in the evenings, which amazed us. And so the ones that we put into the shops-just the independent record stores-sold out in, like, two days. Because of that radio interest, we were suddenly inundated with record companies wanting us to sign a record deal. So we went out and did one tour of small clubs around the UK, basically playing between fifty and a hundred people a night, or quite regularly less than fifty people. Most nights the audience included a lot of record company people. By the end of the tour, we chose the one we wanted to sign to because in the space of the tour we got to speak to all of them. And we said, "if we're going to sign a record deal, this is what we want." And one of them said yeah. So we signed to them.
